"Nengah Kopi merupakan toko kopi legendaris yang didirikan oleh seorang imigran berkebangsaan Tiongkok yang bernama Fei Nan Do (dapat dilihat di lampiran foto). Beliau datang ke Palembang pada tahun 1930-an untuk mempelajari bisnis jual beli telepon genggam. Setelah mendapat gelar sarjana, beliau pergi ke Kemang dan bertemu dengan seorang wanita dalam sebuah karaoke party yang memiliki kesamaan selera lagu dengannya. Namun sayang, hubungan tersebut tidak pernah berkembang menjadi sesuatu yang serius. Patah hati, Fe Nan Do merantau ke negeri Singapura di mana beliau diberi coba biji kopi X oleh salah satu pegawai Toko Apel di Jalan Orchard. Mengetahui bahwa biji kopi X belum dirilis di Indonesia, Fe Nan Do menggarap stok biji kopi tersebut dan menggunakannya sebagai bahan untuk membuat "kopi nengah" yang ternyata banyak disukai. Dengan dibantu teman-temannya dan oleh salah satu saudara laki-lakinya, seorang dokter lulusan UNPAD, membangun toko Nengah Kopi pertama di Jalan Sigura-Gura, Malang. Nengah Kopi sempat memiliki 20 toko kopi di Jakarta, namun akibat kerusuhan tahun 1998, dan karena latar belakang Tiongkok pemiliknya, banyak toko mereka yang dirusak dan dibakar. Sekarang Nengah Kopi hanya memiliki satu cabang yang terletak di Jalan Nangka Raya, Jakarta. Pengalaman saya dalam mencicipi kopi di tempat historis ini cukup berkesan. Tentunya rasa kopinya mantap, namun tidak hanya itu pelayannya sangat ramah, tempatnya nyaman untuk nongkrong sambil menggiat pendorongan rank, dan bahkan pemutaran lagunya menurut saya cukup unik dan variatif (semuanya Taylor Swift)."
